Coniferous Plantation
{Photo}

There are a few examples in the parish, and they are a great addition to the diversity of habitats in the area. When conifers are planted in huge plantations, they can be an environmental problem, as they cut out the light from the forest floor, stopping anything else from growing, and they only support a modest range of birds/mammals/insects, but in the small bits that we have here, they provide an additional source of shelter and food for a wide range of wildlife. In particular, the cones produce a huge source of seeds for birds that like them - the best example is the Crossbill, although I've not seen any in the parish - has anyone else?
