The first motte and bailey had wooden walls This picture depicts King William I (The Conqueror) being presented with the Domesday Book in 1085 and receiving the oath of allegiance from all his nobles and church dignitories. This event ushered in the feudal system to England. The first cathedral is being built. It was consecrated on 5th April 1092 - and was struck by lightning 5 days later. The Normans built the huge ditch to protect their motte and bailey castle The town grew up later inside the walls, these tents are for the nobles attending the Great Council.
