Semi-Improved Grassland
{Photo}

This grassland contrasts with Improved Grassland by being somewhat rougher, and having a wider variety of grasses and wild flowers (and weeds). We have not used a scientific method of defining the category, and whilst the extreme examples are easy to differentiate, it is frequently highly questionable at the border of the two categories, and doubtless many people will disagree with the way we have defined individual pieces - let us know and we'll record your thoughts. There are no examples of Unimproved Grasslands in the parish - in fact, they are extremely rare in this country, as almost nowhere has not been farmed to some extent. Some management (grazing) is required to keep an area as grassland - if you ignore grassland completely, then it will quickly be colonized by scrub and small trees and then become woodland - great in its way, but if you want grassland, you need to graze the area and stop the larger plants getting established.
