8: Water Meadow depressions
Depressions in water meadows that regularly flood in winter and last for a few months as temporary ponds. The grass that grows for the rest of the year looks different from the surrounding grass. These depressions are distinct from the ditches, in that they are not part of the formal irrigation system, but inevitably have some common vegetation. The picture was taken in Jan 2003 from the bedroom window of 5 Castle Keep, and shows an extreme example of the flooding of the water meadows at the southern end of the water meadows. The area in the centre of the photo, behind the trees, is the site of one of the temporary ponds, that sometimes last 3-4 months and sometimes only a few weeks.
