Changing the time of the church clock for British Summer Time

RW

The mechanism of the tower clock at St Lawrence Church will need to be adjusted by one hour so that the one-handed clock dial will display the correct time when the congregation arrives for the 10 am BST Mothering Sunday Service on 30 March.

British Summer Time was first established by the Summer Time Act 1916 after a campaign by builder William Willett. His original proposal was to move the clocks forward by 80 minutes, in 20-minute weekly steps on Sundays in April and by the reverse procedure in September. Source Wikipedia accessed March 2025

If that proposed adjustment had been adopted, it would have been quite a long-drawn out and complicated task for the guardians of the St Lawrence Church clock!

How old is the clock? David James in a 2017 article about the clock said:

"The St Lawrence Church records of 1750 contain a bill from a Robert Wentworth for mending and cleaning the Church Clock at Stratford at a cost of 12 shillings. The records also have an entry for 1776 showing that 15 shillings had been spent for work on a dial."

and some additional information that was added to the webpage after the current dial was installed in May 2019 and the auto-winder mechanism added in 2020.
