Chasing the lunar eclipse around Old Sarum

RW

A local resident has sent in these amazing images to the website, along with the commentary below. Images L-R were taken at 0521, 0552, 0556, 0602, 0604, 0622.

"This morning I aimed to see the partial lunar eclipse and Blood moon from the top of Old Sarum. I'm not sure if there are other budding astronomers in the village but thought worth sharing.

Looking west from Old Sarum over Stratford sub Castle I managed to catch sight of the rapidly depleting moon from 5:15am until 6:20am when a cloud obscured what was left of the moon just before it descended beneath the horizon.

After that I went for a walk around the village and through Little Durnford to observe the sun rise.

A frosty morning walk benefited by observing 9(!) deer, multiple hares, barn owls, heron, little egret, skylarks, partridges and pheasants along with the usual contingent of swans, geese, rabbits and various morning birds.

If you missed this lunar eclipse there is a Total eclipse to look forward to this year, and a Partial next year.

7th September 2025 7:33pm = total lunar eclipse

28th August 2026 = partial lunar eclipse"

Ed: All this activity happened whilst there was a frost, Wiltshire Council gritters were out in action, and most residents were (presumably) asleep in their warm beds.
